Upcycled Burlap Sign

I have a habit of seeing the “potential” in what most people consider trash… and then taking it home only to have it sit in my craft room forever. Because of my goal to not buy craft supplies this year, this habit has gotten a lot worse. So I am now trying to only keep items I see being used for a specific project. I saw this cute sign heading for the dumpster and knew I had to make it into a Halloween craft, so I took it home! Its been a while since I have done a good paper craft, so I decided that’s what this would be 😊

I used:

Burlap sign

Black acrylic paint

Scissors

Paper (orange, white, yellow, purple, black, dark red, and green)

White glue

Paintbrush

Mod Podge

This sign was cute on its own, but it wasn’t quite my style so I started by painting over the words with my black acrylic paint. I let that dry and got to my paper design. I’m a HUGE fan of Hocus Pocus (what millennial isn’t?) so I decided to turn my sign into the Sanderson sisters!

I found a picture of a Hocus Pocus sign that had the hair and shoulders of the Sanderson sisters. I liked how it looked, so I used it as a template. I traced a similar shape for the hair and shirts on their respective colors of paper, cut them out, and put them on the white paper. I cut around the shapes leaving a slight white outline to create space between their heads and the background.

I let those dry and then flattened them by putting them under a heavy book. Once they were dry and flat, I glued them to my sign using mod podge. I put a thin layer on the back of each of the sisters, attached them to the sign in their desired spot, and then covered the whole sign in the mod podge to hold everything down nice and smoothly. I paid extra attention to the edges of the paper because wet paper tends to curl. Then I laid it gently aside and let it dry.

I love how this turned out, but I’m not sure where to put it. If I had a covered porch, it would stay outside but I don’t trust mod podge with the elements. For now, it is sitting next to my fireplace so the sisters can watch TV with me 😊 I truly love projects that fall in my lap like this and happen to be perfect for the season! I can’t wait to see your spooky fall crafts 😊  As always, if you take any fun pictures of any crafts, tag me on Instagram @SmileMakePeopleWonder and use the hashtag #DandelionSmiles.
