Last week, I got a HUGE crafting bug but didn’t know what I wanted to make. Everything I saw on Pinterest or around my craft room seemed uninteresting to me…except yarn. When I was younger, I used to do latch hook rugs all the time. If you don’t know what those are, they’re a way to take small bits of yarn and hook them around a grid in a way that makes super cute pictures. I didn’t have any latch hook kits on hand, so I decided to use the same concept and make my own little craft.
I used:
Yarn (2 colors)
Hot glue gun
A piece of cardboard
Scissors
To start off, I took a small piece of cardboard and sketched triangles on it. I didn’t have a design in mind really but wanted to test this idea out, so I picked a simple shape. Once I decided on random triangles, I picked my colors. For some reason, yellow and light blue called to me (even though I never use them to decorate).

I cut my yarn into a BUNCH of 2.5” long pieces. Yellow was my “background” and blue made my triangles, so needed a good bit more of the yellow. I wasn’t sure how much I would use, so I cut a good handful knowing I could always cut more later. The next step was tying a knot in the end of each piece of yarn. Theoretically, I could have doubled the length of each piece and put the knot in the middle. So that is always an option.

Once I got a good bit of the yarn knotted, I used my hot glue gun to glue each knot flat against the cardboard. I started at the bottom and went in a row, spacing them kind of tightly across the bottom. I started with the yellow and switched to blue when I got to the triangles. As I ran out of yarn pieces I cut more, and at the end of each row I gently brushed the yarn down with my hands to make it lay kinda flat.

The end result for a small piece like this was pretty cute. Obviously, I didn’t try and get very detailed with it this go around and make a fancy shape. I think next time I will make a smiley face! Or maybe a cat face. This isn’t as in depth of a craft as the latch hook rugs, but gives a similar look for a small wall piece or even a Christmas ornament. Hopefully this inspires you to pick up some yarn and a piece of cardboard and see what you can come up with 😊 As always, if you take any fun pictures or videos, tag me on Instagram @SmileMakePeopleWonder and use the hashtag #DandelionSmiles.
